Traveling: camping the outback

In order to save a bit (a lot!) of money, we brought the tent along, thinking that we would probably do a bit of camping and a few nights in hotels.  However, once we started, we realized that we were quite comfy in our tent, and ended up camping the whole way.

The kids love camping.  In fact, they become a bit crazy whenever they get in the tent.  Even after 15 nights.  And camping allowed us to go with the inspiration of the day, and not worry about reservations.

We camped pretty much everywhere: in real campings, in an underground camping (in Coober Pedy), in cattle stations, in a resort, behind roadhouses, and even once on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere (ok, this was not our best night... but we really were in the middle of nowhere.).

We had emus walking around our tent, a dingo steal our food -twice!-, colourful birds offering a beautiful soundtrack to our days, eagles soaring above our heads, sunsets and full moons that were beyond spectacular, more stars that we had ever seen before, and lots, lots, lots of flies.

We were dirty pretty much the whole way through -red sand sure does look pretty, but it stains!-, we ate out of a can more than once, and we had to skip a shower or two, but we were close together and happy.

So to anyone who doesn't despise sleeping in a tent (or a swag, if you want the real thing!), I highly recommend camping your way through the outback.  It's the best way to get the real feel of it.  (And you'll get the best stories too!)

  1. you guys rocks. Seriously. And I am happy to hear that a dingo stole only your food and not one of you!

    1. Yes, otherwise I would have been forced to admit that MGwod was right!

    2. ...There is still time! Dingos have proven time and time again that they love to eat babies! Since Mia appears to have a little belly now, she's going to seem even more appetizing to them! BEWARE OF DINGOS.

    3. She's always had this yummy belly! Thing is, she doesn't have much meat elsewhere, so I think she's safe!

    1. yeah, but they were pretty big eagles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wedge-tailed_eagle) Definitely taller than at least one of my kids!
