La maternelle

Pour faire suite à l'acceptation de Mia à la pré-maternelle, on a reçu aujourd'hui la lettre d'offre pour une place au Lycée Franco-Australien de Canberra pour Élie.  Il aura donc la chance de commencer sa maternelle en français, à l'école Telopea Park dès février prochain.

La compétition pour obtenir une place à cette école est féroce.  Si nous étions pratiquement assurés d'avoir une offre, étant unilingue francophone, nous avons quand même dû soumettre un dossier d'application aussi volumineux que ma demande d'acceptation à la maîtrise.  Et on parle de maternelle ici.  En espérant que le reste de l'année ne soit pas aussi exigeant...

Le lycée comprend l'école primaire et l'école secondaire.  L'éducation est majoritairement bilingue, mais la première partie du primaire se déroule à 80% en français, afin d'instaurer une base solide aux petits étudiants.  Le curriculum, lui, est à moitié français, à moitié australien.

Élie est très heureux de pouvoir aller à l'école en français, et l'école est aussi très heureuse d'avoir un petit francophone qui forcera ses petits camarades à parler français.  Et moi, bien je dois arrêter d'acheter des vêtements en prévision de l'année prochaine, car ce sera le début des uniformes cinq jours par semaine!

(Presque toutes les écoles australiennes, privées ou non, ont des uniformes obligatoires.  Nous sommes chanceux d'être tombés sur une école qui ne fait pas trop mal aux yeux...  celle de notre quartier habille les enfants en coton ouaté vert bouteille et jaune...  cinq jours par semaine... )

Continuing with the same theme as yesterday's post, Elie's letter of offer for a place at the Lycée Franco-Australien de Canberra arrived in the mail today.  Elie will therefore be one of the lucky little ones to start kindergarten at Telopea Park School next February.

Competition for a place at this school is tough.  Even if we were pretty much guaranteed to get in, because Elie only speaks French, we still had to submit an application package that was as thick as my application for my Masters degree.  And may I remind everyone that we are talking about kindergarten here.  Hopefully, the rest of the school year will be a bit more easy going...

The school offers Kindergarten to year 12.  The education is bilingual, but the first three years of primary school are taught in French for 80% of the time, to maximize the early development of French language.  The curriculum of the school is half French, half Australian.

Elie is happy (and relieved) to be able to go to school in French, and the school is happy to have a little French speaker who will force his buddy to speak French.  And I, well, I have to stop buying clothes in advance, because next year will be the beginning of uniforms five days a week!

(Almost all Australian schools, private or public, have mandatory uniforms.  We are pretty lucky to go to a school where the uniform isn't too painful to look at...  our neighbourhood school dresses his students in green and yellow sweats...  five days a week...)
