Traveling: Hobbiton

En descendant vers Taupo, nous avons fait un arrêt obligatoire à Hobbiton, près de Matamata.  Hobbiton est le lieu où on été tourné plusieurs scènes des films Le Hobbit et Le seigneur des anneaux.   Et puisque nous avions un grand fan des hobbits avec nous, il était hors de question de visiter la Nouvelle-Zélande sans faire un pèlerinage au Shire.

Comme toutes les attractions touristiques en Nouvelle-Zélande, Hobbiton nous force à mettre la main assez creuse dans nos poches.  Mais le décor est si bien fait, et si méticuleusement conservé, que la visite en vaut vraiment la peine.  Le billet d'entrée donne droit à l'accès au site, au tour guidé obligatoire et à un rafraîchissement (bière ou cidre brassés spécialement pour le shire) au Dragon Inn à la fin du tour.  Le shire en tant que tel est assez spectaculaire: plein de petits trous de hobbits et de vrais jardins qui débordent de fruits, de légumes et de fleurs, des accessoires de tournage et même quelques animaux vivants.  Tout à l'air absolument vrai, et ça nous a pris environ une demie seconde pour convaincre Mia qu'il y avait vraiment des hobbits qui habitaient le village.

Ça, jumelé au fait qu'elle fut servie un verre de "vraie bière" (ginger ale) au bar à la fin, fît en sorte de rendre cette sortie une de ses préférées du voyage.  Et ce fût aussi vrai pour notre grand fan de Tolkien.

On our way down to Taupo, we made an obligatory pit stop at Hobbiton near Matamata, the actual set where parts of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Ring movies were filmed.  We had one big Hobbit fan traveling with us, and so going to New Zealand without doing this pilgrimage was simply not an option.

Like all the tourist attractions in New Zealand, Hobbiton is not a cheap day out.  But the set is so well done, and so meticulously maintained that it feels totally worth the money.  Your ticket gives you entry to the site, a mandatory guided tour of the shire and a refreshing drink at The Dragon Inn (a specially brewed beer or cider).  The shire itself is quite spectacular: it has several miniature hobbit holes, real gardens filled with fruit, vegetables and flowers, various props and even a few live animals.  It all looks very real, and it took about half a second to convince Mia that there were real hobbits living in that village.

That, added to the fact that she was served a "real beer" (ginger beer) at the bar at the end made this day out one of her favorite of the trip.  And so it was for our true hobbit fan as well.
