Traveling: Queensland, Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays

Les Whitsundays étaient tout en haut de ma liste d'endroits à visiter en famille pendant notre séjour en Australie. J'y étais déjà allée deux fois toute seule, et j'avais bien envi d'y retourner pour faire découvrir ce superbe coin de pays à Nic et aux enfants. Nous avions donc prévu s'y arrêter quelques jours pendant notre voyage dans le Queensland et espérions visiter quelques îles, jouer sur l'incroyable Whitehaven Beach et faire un peu de snorkelling.

Malheureusement, à Airlie Beach, la température n'était juste pas du tout coopérative. Nous avons eu de la pluie, de la pluie et encore de la pluie pendant les trois jours qu'on a passé là-bas. Il n'y avait aucun moyen de faire une excursion dans les Whitsundays sans que ce soit complètement misérable.

À la place, nous avons visité Airlie Beach (qui est constitué d'une rue), on a joué dans le lagon (une plage artificielle), on a traîné dans des cafés et on a fait le tour des boutiques à touristes. On a aussi essayé d'aller faire une randonnée à l'intérieur des terres pour voir une chute, mais ironiquement, la chute était complètement sèche et il y avait tellement de moustiques qu'on s'est sauvé en moins de quatre minutes.

On a passé beaucoup de temps dans notre petit chalet, on s'est amusé (avec un mélange d'excitation et de peur pour certains!) à la collation des loriquets tous les matins et on a eu les jeux d'eau pour nous seul quand on bravait la pluie. J'étais très très déçue (et je n'en suis pas encore totalement revenue...), mais étrangement, c'est l'endroit dont les enfants se souviennent comme ayant été leur arrêt préféré.  Je comprends pas.

Alors voici quelques photos d'Airlie Beach qui ne sont pas du tout représentatives des Whitsundays. Trop de loriquets et pas assez de sable blanc.

The Whitsundays were at the top of my list for places to go with the family during our time in Australia. I had been there twice already on my own, and was looking forward to going back and showing this beautiful part of the world to Nic and the kids. So of course, we planned to stop there for a few days during our Queensland vacation and were hoping to do some island hopping, to play on the stunning Whitehaven Beach and do some snorkelling.

Unfortunately, in Airlie Beach, the weather just did not cooperate at all. We had rain, and rain, and more rain, the whole three days we spent there. There was absolutely no way we could have gone on one of those Whitsundays cruises and not be miserable.

So instead, we visited Airlie Beach (which is one street), played in the lagoon (a man-made beach),  hung out at some cafes and roam the tourists' shops. We also tried to go for a bit of a hike inland to see a waterfall, but ironically, the waterfall was dry and there were so many mosquitoes that we didn't stick around for more than 4 minutes.

We spent a lot of time in our cabin, enjoyed (with a mix of excitement and fear for some!) the lorikeets' feeding every morning and pretty much had the resort's waterpark to ourselves when we braved the rain. I was very disappointed (and I am still not quite over it yet...), but somehow the kids remember it as being their favorite place. Go figure.

So here are some pictures of our time in Airlie Beach that are not at all representative of what the Whitsundays are. Too many lorikeets, not enough white sands.
