Coming home and going back to work inevitably meant that we had to go on a hunt for a daycare for our baby Charlotte, once more. And I am happy to report that as it turned out, we are way luckier in Gatineau than in Canberra in that department!
Charlotte was on the centralised waiting list since she was born (I know... I was late...) and was finally offered two spots as a substitute child*, including one at the daycare where Elie and Mia used to go. Being a sub is far from ideal when both parents work full-time away from home, but since our old daycare's way of handling that situation meant that we were almost guaranteed to have a spot every day, we crossed our fingers and jumped onboard. I have to admit also that going back to a place we knew and loved was very soothing... A calmer mummy means a happier child, right?
So Charlotte attended daycare part-time for three weeks, and then last week, surprise! A spot opened up in the group where she was the substitute! So the headache was over before it even began, and we now have a full-time spot in our favorite daycare. Charlotte is exactly where she would have been if we had never left. We are so happy and relieved. Of course, Charlotte doesn't yet share our enthusiasm...
*For those of you who are not fully aware of the new measures imposed in those days of austerity, most subsidised daycare must now have substitute kids in order to fill the spots of the regular kids who are away sick or on vacations. In summary, the subs are not guaranteed a spot every day (if all the kids in their age group are present = home!) and must change groups and teachers on a daily basis. A nightmare of instability for the little ones and an annoying puzzle for the families, the teachers and the administrators. All in all an awesome idea.
