Exploring: Canberra's markets

1. le prix de la nourriture dans les épiceries;

 Since we arrived, we've been a little shocked by:
1. the price of the food here, and
2. the lack of variety and choice in the supermarkets.

So this weekend, we decided to follow the advice of our friends Jorge and Lenela, and visit a few of the local markets.

On Saturday, we began with Fyshwick Markets, a fresh food market.  It's nice, half-outdoor, and offers a lot of variety of food.  We could even buy kangaroo, crocodile and camel meat there if we wished.  Since the weather was close to perfect, we decided to stay for a little lunch and one well-deserved cup of delicious Australian coffee.  The kids chose to have hot-dogs.  I know, doesn't sound very exotic.  But that's before you start trying to eat them.  Basically, the Australian hot-dogs are made of a big sausage, on a piece of square white bread, topped with some onions and ketchup.  After looking at it for a bit, Élie decided that the best strategy was to attack it from the middle.  Total failure.

On Sunday, we visited 'Old Bus Depot Markets'.  This one offers a variety of things: prepared food, clothing, toys, homemade stuff, plants, etc.  The kids had a little sweet snack and we, once again, decided to make the most of the wonderful weather and sat outside for another wonderful cup of coffee.  And the kids even got to try their first 'babyccino': frothed milk with cocoa powder in an espresso cup.  For Mia, it was love at first taste.  I can predict lots of girls' café outings in the next six months.

Little side note on Australian coffees:  I cannot explain how or why, but the coffee here is just awesome.  It taste better and is creamier than back home.  And for having worked in a coffee place in Sydney for about a year, I can testify that they are made exactly like home.  Total mystery.

  1. Totally flattered that we made the blog! :)
    Hope you enjoyed the markets as much as we did and that you found some good fresh food to buy. If they didn't impress you this time, they will the next. The beauty and simplicity of the markets grow on you and become addicting!
    Looks like Elie and Mia have found the best part of the Old Bus Deport Markets though - outdoor free play, oh and yes, those Babyccino's!!!
