Traveling: Gold Coast, prise 2

Après avoir décidé de laisser tomber le voyage au Japon, pour toutes les raisons dont j'ai parlées ici, nous nous retrouvions devant deux semaines de vacances avec rien à faire. Ça ne nous ressemble pas beaucoup, et évidemment, on a rapidement décidé que ça nous prenait un plan B. Le plan B fût donc d'acheter les billets les moins chers disponibles, et nous nous sommes retrouvés sur la Gold Coast pour une très long weekend.

La météo malheureusement ne fût pas complètement à la hauteur. Nous sommes quand même allés à la plage et dans la forêt tropicale comme on avait prévu. On a aussi eu une journée fantastique au fantastique Byron Bay (et avons souhaité être allé directement là pour les vacances à la place!). Et puis finalement, on a aussi décidé d'amener les enfants à SeaWorld, parce que c'est difficile d'aller sur la Gold Coast sans visiter un parc thématique (c'est comme aller à Orlando en Floride sans visiter Disney), mais comme ils avaient une promotion pour la basse saison, on s'est ramassé avec des passes valident pour 7 jours dans tous les parcs avec notre entrée. Alors on est aussi allé à Movie World.

Nous (les adultes) n'avons pas été impressionnés par les parcs thématiques, et je peux honnêtement dire que tout le monde a eu plus de plaisir à jouer à la "tague" ensemble sur la plage à la noirceur après un petit picnic impromptu que pendant nos journées dans les parcs. Byron Bay, par contre, a plu à tout le monde. On a visité le phare, vu pleins de dolphins et même un requin, on a joué sur la magnifique plage vide et fait un peu de bodyboarding. C'était agréable et tellement, tellement relaxant.

Et puis, ben c'est le voyage où mon appareil a décidé de rendre l'âme soudainement. Alors voici quelques photos de la première moitié de notre dernier voyage en Australie.

So after we decided to skip Japan, for the many reasons I spoke about here, we were left with two full weeks of holidays with nothing to do. This is very unlike us, and it didn't take long before we decided that we needed a plan B. Plan B came in the form of the cheapest airfares we could find at the last minute, and so we headed for the Gold Coast for a very long weekend.

The weather turned out to be so-so. We still went to the beach and the rainforest, like we had planned. We also had a wonderful day in wonderful Byron Bay (and wished we had gone there instead!). In the end, we decided to bring the kids to SeaWorld, because it's hard to go to the Gold Coast without going to a theme park (it's a bit like going to Orlando in Florida without going to Disney), but they had a promotion for the low season, and with the one day entry we got a 7-day pass for all the parks. So we ended going to Movie World as well.

We (the adults) were not all that impressed with the theme parks, and I honestly believe that all of us had way more fun playing "tip" on the beach at night after an impromptu picnic than in the parcs. Byron Bay, on the other hand, proved popular with everyone. We visited the lighthouse, saw lots of dolphins and even a shark, we played on the beautiful empty beach and did some bodyboarding. It was nice and very, very relaxing.

Anyhow, this is also the trip when my camera decided to suddenly die. So here are a few photos of the first half of our last trip down under.

Traveling: Gold Coast Theme Park

La Gold Coast est la capitale des parcs thématiques en Australie.  Alors évidemment, on ne pouvait s'éviter une visite (oui, Élie était très au courant de l'existence des parcs.  L'école et les petits copains sont définitivement un outil de marketing très très puissant).  Le choix est grand, mais les parcs sont, selon moi, beaucoup plus petits et moins extravagants que leurs versions américaines, mais aussi chers, évidemment.  Tout de même, nous avons été très chanceux, et comme nous visitions la région pendant LE mois de basse saison, nous avons réussis à obtenir une passe illimitée pour Dreamworld, valide pour 30 jours, pour seulement 30$.

Nous y sommes donc allés deux fois.  J'avais l'intention de ne passer que les avant-midis là-bas, mais il n'était pas question de sortir les enfants de là une fois entrés.  Et puis finalement, des amis de Canberra nous y ont rejoint pour la deuxième journée.  Nous avons donc passé deux journées pleines de manèges, de spectacles, de crème glacées et de glissades d'eau.

The Gold Coast is Australia's theme park capital, so it was pretty much an obligatory stop for us (yes, Elie knew all about the theme parks up there.  School recess is a powerful powerful marketing tool).  There are several parks to choose from, but they are, according to me, smaller and less extravagant than the ones you find in the US, although as expensive.  However, we lucked out, thanks to visiting during THE off-season month, and scored a 30 days pass for 30$ each at Dreamworld.  

So we went twice.  Originally, I wanted to go for only a morning visit each day, but there was no taking the kids out of there once we were in.  And on the second day, we were joined by some Canberra friends too.  So we went on lots of rides, saw many shows, ate ice cream, and splashed in a few water slides.  

 Enfin, nous avons aussi visité un parc municipal, tout à fait gratuit celui-là: Broadwater Parklands.  Je l'ai déjà dit auparavant: les australiens ont vraiment le tour de faire de beaux parcs.  Celui-là offrait une très grande aire de jeux d'eau tout à fait extraordinaire pour les tout-petits, des aires de picnics, des bbq, des jeux de toutes sortes, de grands espaces verts et un sentier de vélo pour les enfants (complet avec obstacles et rampes, etc).  Et tout ça sur le bord de la mer.  On a beaucoup aimé notre visite, et Élie a même surnommé le parc "le petit paradis".  Et nous a supplié d'organiser sa fête là l'an prochain...

Donc tout ça, plus un peu de magasinage dans de vrais outlets et les crevettes les plus grosses que nous n'ayons jamais mangées nous ont donné un cinq jours intense, mais bien diversifié.  On est revenu fatigué, mais bien heureux.  Et il paraît qu'on doit ABSOLUMENT y retourner, car on n'a pas encore tout vu!

Finally, we also visited a municipal parc, totally free this time: Broadwater Parklands.  I have said it before: the aussies really know how to build nice playgrounds!  This one had a really large and superb water-play area for the little ones, picnic tables and bbq, all sorts of playground games, large green spaces and a bike trail for kids (complete with obstacles and ramps and all).  And all of it by the ocean.  We really enjoyed our visit, and Elie even nicknamed it "the little paradise".  And also requested that his birthday be celebrated there next year...

So, all that, with a bit of outlet shopping and the biggest prawns I had ever eaten, gave us five very intense and well-diversified days.  We came back a bit tired, but really happy.  And apparently, we ABSOLUTELY have to go back, because we didn't see EVERYthing!

Traveling: Gold Coast Hinterland

Pendant notre séjour, nous avons pris un peu de temps pour aller visiter la forêt subtropicale qui borde la Gold Coast, une région appelée Hinterland.  La région comprend entre autres trois parcs nationaux: Springbrook National Park, Lamington National Park et Tamborine National Park, les deux premiers faisant partie de la liste du patrimoine mondiale de l'Unesco.

Il pleuvait cette journée-là, mais sous l'épaisseur de la végétation, la pluie ne nous a presque pas dérangée.  On ne savait pas vraiment où on s'en allait et ce qu'on allait voir, et on s'est promené en se fiant à notre instinct et aux bribes d'information qu'on réussissait à obtenir avec le peu de couverture que notre Iphone avait dans la région.  Tout de même, avec du recul, on a probablement réussis à voir la plupart des plus beaux sites du Gold Coast Hinterland.

Nous avons, en gros, visité trois sites: les chûtes de Purlingbrook, le Natural Bridge, et les chûtes de Curtis Falls.  Les enfants sont rendus de bons marcheurs et on même insisté pour faire la plus longue des randonnées (4km en dénivellation quand même, pour des petites pattes!), alors que Nic et moi étions prêts à se contenter du point de vue.  Une bonne décision, somme toute, car c'était assurément la plus spectaculaire de toutes.

Malheureusement, nous étions à la fin de l'été, et les chûtes étaient un peu à sec, mais tout de même encore assez vigoureuses pour nous impressionner.  En fait, on a tellement aimé se balader dans la forêt et les montagnes, que ce qui ne devait être qu'une petite aventure de quelques heures s'est étirée jusqu'au couché du soleil.  Voici quelques images de ce que nous avons vu.

During our holiday, we took a bit of time away from the beaches to visit the rainforest.  Located in-land from the Gold Coast coastal strip, the Gold Coast Hinterland is home to, among others, three national parks: Springbrook National Park, Lamington National Park and Tamborine National Park.  The two first ones and their beautiful sub tropical rainforest are Unesco World Heritage listed.

It was raining on and off on that day, but under the thick canopy of the rainforest, it didn't bother us at all.  We didn't really know where we were going or what we were going to see, and decided to navigate with our instincts and the bits of info we managed to get out of 3G coverage in the area.  Nevertheless, in hindsight, I think we managed to see most of the prettiest sites in the Hinterland.

We visited three big sites: the Purlingbrook falls, Natural Bridge and Curtis Fall falls.  The kids, who are becoming pretty good hikers, even insisted on going on the longest one of all (4 km down and then uphill, not bad for such little legs!), while Nic and I were pretty happy with only the lookout.  It was a good decision though, since this was surely the most spectacular one.

Unfortunately though, we were visiting at the end of summer, and the falls were running a bit dry.  There was just enough water to still be impressive (to us!).  In fact, we liked the rainforest and the mountains so much that what was originally supposed to be a short visit, lasted almost until dusk.  Here are a few images of what we saw.

Traveling: Surfers Paradise

Puisque nous voyagions hors-saison (note: le hors-saison sur la Gold Coast ne dure qu'un mois, mars), nous avons eu le luxe d'un beau grand appartement qui donnait sur la plage pour nos vacances.  Nous étions à Main Beach, qui est un peu au nord de Surfers Paradise.  Ça nous plaisait bien, car la plage était pratiquement vide et nous avions moins de gratte-ciels et un peu plus de végétation.

On a fait plusieurs petites sorties sur la plage, où on a passé le plus clair de notre temps à jouer dans le sable.  Car Surfers Paradise ne s'appelle pas comme ça pour rien!  L'eau est chaude, mais les vagues sont FORTES!  Bien trop fortes pour que nos petits cocos s'y aventurent.  Et Nic et moi avons eu notre part de bouillons.

Bref, voici quelques images de nos petits moments sur la plage (pas mal toutes prisent pendant la même heure par contre, puisque j'essaie de ne pas traîner ma caméra sur la plage trop trop souvent...  Il y a eu beaucoup "d'accidents" dans les derniers temps).

Since we were traveling off-season (note: the off-season on the Gold Coast last one month: march), we had the luxury of staying in a beautiful and very large apartment on the beach.  We were at Main Beach, which is just a little north of Surfers Paradise.  It was a good spot for us because the beach was almost empty, and we had less skyscrapers and a bit more trees.

We made a few little outings to the beach, where most of our time was spent playing in the sand.  Because Surfers Paradise got its name for a reason.  The water is warm, but the waves are STRONG! Way too strong for the kids to go in the water.  And strong enough that Nic and I drank a fair bit of the ocean.

But anyways, here are a few images of our time on the beach (most taken during the same hour however, since I try not to take my camera on the beach too too often...  there has been lots of "accident" in the recent past).

Traveling: Gold Coast

Nous sommes de retour de notre petite escapade sur la Gold Coast.  À part un peu de pluie, et quelques méduses, ce fût un autre petit voyage presque parfait.

Nous avons passé deux jours à Dreamworld, un dans la forêt tropicale, and le reste sur la plage.  Nous avons bougé beaucoup et nous nous sommes couchés pas mal tard, alors nous rentrons heureux et plein de soleil, mais définitivement pas reposés!

Voici un petit aperçu de nos vacances pour l'instant.  Je reviendrai plus tard avec plus de détails!

We are just back from our little escapade on the Gold Coast.  Besides a bit of rain, and a few jellyfishes, it was another pretty perfect holiday.

We spent two days at Dreamworld, one in the rainforest and the rest on the beach.  We did a lot of things, and had quite a few late nights, so we came back full of sun and sand, but definitely not really relaxed...!
